Open Mic Slam Poetry & Spoken Word
THURSDAY, JULY 23rd @ 8:30 PM
Join us at the HIVE Studio & Gallery in Downtown LA for an evening of slam poetry, spoken word, and open mike MAGIC to kick-off the Skid Row Citizens Bureau of Journalism, a collaboration between Skid Row Photography Club & The Tiziano Project. This collaboration aims to empower residents with training and tools to become legitimate ground-level journalists, reporting on the ins and outs of the Skid Row community, and ultimately empowering both themselves and the neighborhood at large.
The HIVE Gallery is located at 729 S. Spring St.

Skid Row Photography Club was created to provide the local community with a healthy artistic outlet designed to bring new possibilities of self-expression as well as personal development and growth. Drawing BEE (POSTPONED til NEXT WEEK)
Every other Sunday and that means NEXT Sunday!
We got costumes, sometimes we have a model that doesn't mind letting us draw her 'whole'' form (if you know what I mean). It's 2 hours of laughter, some skin, some color, and a ton live drawing!
3,5, & 10 min poses. 10-15 donation for model (depending on attendance) so bring your friends.
You don't have to be a master artist we are all learning what we can so don't be shy...

Insects vs Robots will be playing the main stage and one of my personal favorites, Lo-Fi Freq, will be spinning the dj booth.

Paul Torres-exploring the Superficially Grotesque by David Gough
Pop surrealist Paul Torres, was a pop surrealist-even before the term was coined-as his long term friend-Lance Richlin will attest, which I guess makes him one of the Godfathers of the movement. On evidence of his extensive cannon, his proliferation certainly earns him the moniker.

The themes however, offer a more abject and detached form than the claustrophobic limitations of such supine category,even if the bombshells with scud missile breasts, and pneumatic pumped hunks in faded tats, inform the diet of comic books Paul ingested in his native Chile.
Its the corners of the canvases that discern with their disquiet-decapitated heads and disembodied limbs, used syringes, condoms and coke bottles scattered like junk food tokens of psychopathic, psychosexual Americana. The swinging pendulous breasts of old wet hags in shopping marts, with their parasitic screaming bastards in tow-looking for all the world like a modern day fabled Snow white and obligatory dwarves of the age. Its the kind of superficially grotesque, Toulouse Lautrec might be elucidating, if he lived on the West Coast today-although I hasten to add that Paul is much taller than the diminutive, absinthe, swilling Frenchman.
Be it long-shadowed scenes of sun-drenched Venice beach or seamy downtown LA, his work peels back the lip gloss of the West coast, revealing the rotting yellow teeth barred beneath.

This week we will be watching Choke based on the Chuck Palahniuk novel about a sex addict who is in recovery and also dealing with his mother's hospitalization.
We seem to be on a dark but uplifting movie kick here at The Hive.
We are also trying to put together a list for the next six months of movies. If you have any suggestions email julie (or nathan) @thehivegallery.com and tell us the date you'd like it shown and we will check OldBank for availablitity. We want to make the list this weekend so times-a-running out!
