Article on Ovation TV by Craigo covering Mike Street's art wall at The Hive Gallery this month!!

Mike's show at the Hive Gallery was a complete success as he sold a BUNCH of stuff and was his charming, charismatic self in public!

His work is EXTREMELY interesting and I hate to say it... but photos of his pieces really don't do it justice. He "sandwiches" shards of paper (slightly burnt and singed around the edges) and the "roots" of the trees are small sewing "threads". There's no background in the frames, so you see the wall and shadow of the work behind it.

Join us at the HIVE Studio & Gallery in Downtown LA for an evening of slam poetry, spoken word, and open mike MAGIC to kick-off the Skid Row Citizens Bureau of Journalism, a collaboration between Skid Row Photography Club & The Tiziano Project. This collaboration aims to empower residents with training and tools to become legitimate ground-level journalists, reporting on the ins and outs of the Skid Row community, and ultimately empowering both themselves and the neighborhood at large.

The HIVE Gallery is located at 729 S. Spring St.

Paul Torres-exploring the Superficially Grotesque by David Gough

Pop surrealist Paul Torres, was a pop surrealist-even before the term was coined-as his long term friend-Lance Richlin will attest, which I guess makes him one of the Godfathers of the movement. On evidence of his extensive cannon, his proliferation certainly earns him the moniker.

The themes however, offer a more abject and detached form than the claustrophobic limitations of such supine category,even if the bombshells with scud missile breasts, and pneumatic pumped hunks in faded tats, inform the diet of comic books Paul ingested in his native Chile.

Its the corners of the canvases that discern with their disquiet-decapitated heads and disembodied limbs, used syringes, condoms and coke bottles scattered like junk food tokens of psychopathic, psychosexual Americana. The swinging pendulous breasts of old wet hags in shopping marts, with their parasitic screaming bastards in tow-looking for all the world like a modern day fabled Snow white and obligatory dwarves of the age. Its the kind of superficially grotesque, Toulouse Lautrec might be elucidating, if he lived on the West Coast today-although I hasten to add that Paul is much taller than the diminutive, absinthe, swilling Frenchman.

Be it long-shadowed scenes of sun-drenched Venice beach or seamy downtown LA, his work peels back the lip gloss of the West coast, revealing the rotting yellow teeth barred beneath.

This week we will be watching Choke based on the Chuck Palahniuk novel about a sex addict who is in recovery and also dealing with his mother's hospitalization.

We seem to be on a dark but uplifting movie kick here at The Hive.

We are also trying to put together a list for the next six months of movies. If you have any suggestions email julie (or nathan) @thehivegallery.com and tell us the date you'd like it shown and we will check OldBank for availablitity. We want to make the list this weekend so times-a-running out!

This month we are featured a hip hop artists, Double B, from South Bend Indiana!! Come see what this kid from Indiana has to rap about and then spout off some of your own lyrics or something someone wrote that just needs to be shared. It's always interesting...

Treiops Treyfid: In Citizen LA

"Power People" is a large scale mixed-media installation by downtown Los Angeles artist Treiops Treyfid. Experimenting with a wide array of material, Treiops creates conceptual works that address social issues regarding identity, consumerism, and environment. In this particular piece, he uses holographic foil, polyester resin, and recyclables to create a panorama of how the city of Los Angeles would look under water. In the foreground, three human silhouetted forms stand tall. Their torsos consist of large star-shaped holes that are sealed with holographic foil. An LED lighting system illuminates the fields of foil, giving the appearance of energy bursting from their bodies. Entwined around their legs is a mass of thick electrical cords, woven together and cumbersomely piled on the ground. A holographic sun rises above the scene, illuminating the tops of the inundated skyscrapers. Treiops offers his rendition of what would happen to the Earth should polar ice caps melt and sea levels rise, due to consequences of unlimited and inefficient use of energy.

My 9-year-old grandson just called my attention to a CLUSTER OF BEES approximately the size of a football in a magnolia tree (about 10 feet from the ground) in the yard between my house and my daughter's house. Is there a bee-keeper out there who would want to collect them? If I don't hear from someone tonight, I will have to call the City Hall in the morning to see how they advise getting rid of them. Can't have them hanging around here--don't want to take a chance on them attacking either of my grandkids, or my elderly parents (ages 82 and 91) who also live on the same piece of property. SO FAR THE BEES HAVE NOT SHOWN AGGRESSION, SO HOPEFULLY THEY ARE NOT THE AFRICANIZED VARIETY, BUT I WANT THEM GONE!!! IF NO ONE WANTS THEM, THEY DIE BY WHATEVER MEANS THE CITY RECOMMENDS.

Costume figure model tailor made for the HIVE artists and residents. Open to all drawing enthusiasts who are interested in surreal- narrative oriented specialty costume drawing workshop.

If you've never been to the HIVE gallery and really can't picture what the shop might be like, imagine...
anime, cosplay, vampires, freak show, circus, alice in wonderland, goth galz, naughty nurses... you name it...
they are the inhabitants of our surrealistic landscapes in the art represented at the HIVE Gallery.

This workshop is open to all comers for a small donation fee to pay the model fairly.

A Special Night deserves...

A special thanks to everyone who attended the anniversary show on Saturday. We had an amazing performance on the main stage by Ninja Academy who recently played my favorite Brewery in Grand Rapids, Founder's.
The DJ booth in the back drew more attention than normal with Quangstah's dueling Gameboys and DJ Kronick. Always a good time.
We sold amazing art to amazing people and the turnout was spectacular. We poured the honey on thick this month and it was a good thing because there was plenty to share it with.
Also, thanks to all the artists and residents who participated in the potluck. The food was delicious, especially Laura Diamond's guacamole. OhMyGod.

It was divine. All of it. The whole evening. Let the honey flow.

Christopher Ulrich Has A Story For U.

Some of you may remember Ulrich. He's shown at The Hive on a number of occasions. Last month he entered a piece entitle, " I Love U" and this month he's got his own wall! There were a number of occurrences that brought this about and Ulrich has put together a story in the notebook with a heart on it that hangs from the belt of the rat. The idea is to read the tale and then explore the wall in appropriate succession. It's a dark tale for what has turned into a dark arts showcase.

Come down Saturday night at 8 PM to enjoy the darkness with us.

'Demoneater' Key Details

Here you can see some of the details Ulrich has painted on his wall. Though you would be lucky to own just one one of his pieces... this wall has a story to tell and the 'keys' are an essential part a of the 'Demoneater' philosophy.

I'm pretty sure these are all lightboxes or use electricity to illuminate in some way. The face with the bulls-eye and knife is entitle 'father' and to the left is 'mother'.

Mosaic Puzzle by Corey Smith

This piece is amazing and of gigantic proportions. Photographs simply do not do it justice, but I simply had to post some. The bottom photo is just a small section of the left corner. It's made of thousands of puzzle pieces fastened and overlapping each other to make a mosaic.
